Captain Hardy Smith House

The Captain Hardy Smith House is located in Dublin, Georgia. It is the oldest home in Dublin on its original location. Built in 1873 it is located at 307 West Gaines Street in Downtown Dublin.

The restoration of the home included searching for mature pine suitable for cutting the large barge boards with no knots. The ones used came from the Altamaha Swamp around Hindsville, Georgia.

Breeze Way New Gate and Repairs

This is a comparison of original nails to Home Depot nails made in Taiwan. Makes it tough to do repairs.

Before the gate...

Built a new gate out of mainly original wood from the house. Mainly for Max and Lady our dogs.

Ready for painting....

Finished product!

Rotten wood on the breezeway. I figured out how this happened....crossing of the roof where the rain comes down. Original timber almost totally rotten.

Took original timbers from the back of the house for repair work.

Cut the rotten part of the cover board and put another together.

Final product!

More rotten wood on the back side of the house....had to take off boards and replace.

Ready for pudy....

Had to cut about an inch underside...more rotten wood.

Final product again!

  1. I cringed looking at the nails. The repairs are tough enough, the least you could do to make it easier is to choose high-quality materials. Good job on the gate repair, by the way. Problem with wood is, they don't do well with the rain, but I guess you'll be fine with your carpentry skills. Leeanne @ MasterMyList.com
