Captain Hardy Smith House

The Captain Hardy Smith House is located in Dublin, Georgia. It is the oldest home in Dublin on its original location. Built in 1873 it is located at 307 West Gaines Street in Downtown Dublin.

The restoration of the home included searching for mature pine suitable for cutting the large barge boards with no knots. The ones used came from the Altamaha Swamp around Hindsville, Georgia.

New side steps

Side steps were in need of replacing.

Quite an effort to remove all the boards

Due to the almost 100 degree weather had to bring out the tent!

Most of the step boards were beyond repair. However, a couple were ok when flipped over and the one shown here was 3 pieces glued to make one. On the white back boards about half were replaced and the rest restored.

Putting on the top coat for the steps.

 New steps!

Complete view after scraping, sanding and repainting the entire section of steps, railing and side.

New steps and look for front porch

The front steps were in need of replacing. In addition the rails had rotten wood.

New boards

Fresh coat of a dark grey

Repair of the railing. Lucky that the left side was in pretty good shape to restore.

New top rail a real job.

Decided to pain the front porch as it was quite aged.

New front porch look.

New steps, rail repair and front porch painted.

Nice clean new look for the front porch.
