Captain Hardy Smith House

The Captain Hardy Smith House is located in Dublin, Georgia. It is the oldest home in Dublin on its original location. Built in 1873 it is located at 307 West Gaines Street in Downtown Dublin.

The restoration of the home included searching for mature pine suitable for cutting the large barge boards with no knots. The ones used came from the Altamaha Swamp around Hindsville, Georgia.

Recycled materials from 100 year old home and Old Timbers

The City of Dublin tore down this old blue home in 2013. It was approximately 100 years old and only two blocks away from the Hardy Smith House. Many good materials were salvaged from the home before it was torn down. These materials are the source of the restoration for the dining room and the master bedroom at the Hardy House. This back part of the Hardy House was rebuilt around 1900 due to fire. Therefore the use of the blue house materials matches the dating of both structures.

Old timbers milled and used as materials for the Hardy House. These timbers were found in downtown dublin in a dumpster.

Freshly cut they still had to be cured for about a year to get all the moisture still trapped in the wood.

New look on the front of the Plantation

The Hardy House has never had a drive way so we created one that allows us to drive on and off the property. We took the river rocks from the root cellar and busted them up to create a lining for the driveway.

The original screen doors have now been restored and placed on the home. There is nothing like screen doors in the spring and summer in the South.

View from the inside of the front door.

The Well

The well was discovered when renovations were being made to the house. All renovations were begun after the foundation to preserve the house was set up in July of 1995. This well is constantly full and the water is pure. It is drawn to drink. In the summer it is cool and the winter it is warm. It goes down approximately 20 foot to the water line below.

Building the case so nobody would fall in.

Covered up

Breeze Way New Gate and Repairs

This is a comparison of original nails to Home Depot nails made in Taiwan. Makes it tough to do repairs.

Before the gate...

Built a new gate out of mainly original wood from the house. Mainly for Max and Lady our dogs.

Ready for painting....

Finished product!

Rotten wood on the breezeway. I figured out how this happened....crossing of the roof where the rain comes down. Original timber almost totally rotten.

Took original timbers from the back of the house for repair work.

Cut the rotten part of the cover board and put another together.

Final product!

More rotten wood on the back side of the house....had to take off boards and replace.

Ready for pudy....

Had to cut about an inch underside...more rotten wood.

Final product again!
